What a journey this has been for our family. As I get ready to watch my son Billy and the rest of the Class of 2017 don their cap and gowns, cheering wildly for each other at graduation, I want to take a moment to share some thoughts about our family’s experience at Learning Prep. Perhaps it will sound familiar to you, or at least give you a sense of what I hope will be your family’s journey at LPS.
Billy arrived at Learning Prep as a young elementary student with so many learning and social challenges. His last year in public school had been heartbreaking, tears nearly every day. From our first tour of this school, when my normally very quiet son turned to me and said, “These kids are like me” I knew we had found the right place for him and for our family.
Learning Prep changed the trajectory of Billy's life as well as our family’s. Billy calls LPS “my second home” and that sums it up perfectly. Learning Prep’s extraordinary teachers and counselors have always been there for us – through the best of times and the hardest times – with kindness, respect and thoughtful guidance. Billy’s transformation has been nothing short of amazing. The isolated and scared little boy who arrived at LPS has become a happy and self-confident young man, passing MCAS, successfully participating in the work/study program and is moving on to a terrific transition program thanks to the endless dedication and skill of the LPS staff.
But probably most amazingly, I never imagined him having the deep friendships that he has developed at Learning Prep. Many of these friendships have extended to family friendships that we hope will last a lifetime.
We are grateful every day that our family found Learning Prep. I am proud to support LPS, to ensure that the school has the funding needed to be able provide this same academic and social lifeline to students from across Massachusetts. I hope you will consider joining me by making a gift today in honor of all of the incredible hard working students at Learning Prep.
